Listen To Code Free DVD Resource Advice
If you're planning to buy a DVD player, Code Free DVD Resource recommends very strongly that you buy one that's code free. A coded DVD player can only play DVDs from the area you live in, and you'll find this restricting. Why are some DVD players coded?
This is the story. Motion picture studios in the United States wanted to control the release of movies around the world. The best way they could think of for doing this was an area code programmed into DVD players, so that DVDs can only be played in the area in which they were released.
We're All In Zones
For this purpose the world has been divided up into six zones, zone one, as you'd expect, being the USA, US regions and Canada. Zone two includes Europe, Japan, the Middle East, Egypt, and South Africa, Greenland. Zone three is Taiwan, Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Hong Kong.
Zone four is Mexico, South America, Central America, Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, and the Caribbean. Zone five is the former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, India, most of Africa, North Korea, and Mongolia. Zone six is China, all by itself! This zoning means that a coded DVD player will only play DVDs for that zone.
Is Your DVD Player Coded?
If you already have a DVD player and would like to know if it's coded, Code Free DVD Resource would like you to know that it probably is if it was bought in one of the larger electrical goods stores in the US. If you're still not sure, simply try a DVD from a different zone and you'll have your answer. If it plays, you have an uncoded DVD player. If not, you're coded.
The advantages to owning a code free DVD player are obvious. But Code Free DVD Resource would like to warn readers of a possible disadvantage. This disadvantage is so serious it could seriously undermine your use of your code free DVD player. The situation is this: Recently, the Motion Picture Association of American (MPAA) developed a new system called RCE (Regional Code Enhancing) in an attempt to thwart viewers' efforts to overcome the coding system.
RCE Is Coming
RCE will be included on almost all new zone one DVD releases. This new technology was created to prevent consumers with Code free DVD players from watching DVD discs purchased in North America. From now on, most zone one DVD discs will be including this technology. So you may find in the future that even some DVD discs bought in the United States will not work on your Code free DVD player. As yet, Code Free DVD Resource can't tell you whether or not this technology will be included in other zones.
Code free DVD players can overcome this problem, but as things stand you would have to change the code for the DVD being played from your remote. In case you're wondering, it is legal to own a code free DVD player, as long as you're not using it for anything illegal!
Don't Do It Yourself
If you've found that you have a coded DVD player and you're wondering if it's possible to decode it yourself, you should know that it is possible, but unless you're an engineer, Code Free DVD Resource does not recommend it. Far too many people attempt to do this and end up damaging their DVD players. Also, by attempting to modify it yourself, you should be aware that you'll be voiding any manufacturer's warranty.
